Monday - June 13, 2016

11:00 a.m.       Realtime Contest –  (.25 PDCs w/ 96% accuracy)

12:00 – 1:00    Registration

1:00 – 2:30      Tyler Miller & Gay Wilson – IT Security & Iowa Court Information System (.15) Tyler’s presentation will be about how to stay secure online, maintaining a secure computer, email safety, and a vulnerability assessment overview and/or web app vulnerability test that the Judicial Branch IT Department conducted.  Gay will be talking about the court reporter’s note drop, Me2U, and other software issues reporters may be having throughout the state.

2:30 – 2:40       Break with Vendors

 2:40 – 3:40       Judge Christopher McDonald – Court of Appeals/Appeals (.10) Judge McDonald will be discussing the importance of our transcripts and what the Court of Appeals does with our transcripts after we file them, how they use them in their rulings, and how valuable it is to “preserve” the record through our transcripts.

3:40 – 4:00        Break with Vendors

4:00 – 5:00        Misty Bubke & Cristi Bauerly – E-filing Transcripts (.10)The judicial district Misty and Cristi work in was one of the pilot districts for EDMS (Electronic Document Management System).  Misty and Cristi and their fellow court reporters were part of the pilot project to implement an electronic court system in the State of Iowa, which included court transcripts and the procedures for filing the same. 

Wine & Canvas - 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Palmer's on Ingersoll) 

Our wine and canvas event was so much fun last year that we decided to do it again!   You need to sign up in advance at the link below.  Once we have a finalized painting, we will send out the example.  It will be another steno-themed painting.  This event will be held at Palmer's Deli and Market - 2843 Ingersoll Ave, Des Moines, Iowa.  The cost is $35.

Tuesday – June 14, 2016

8:00 – 8:30         Annual Business Meeting

8:30 – 10:00       Jeff Noble & Frank Severino – Infamous Defendant (.15) Jeff and Frank will be discussing the most infamous defendant in Polk County, Jack Hays, who has been convicted of burglary in the first degree and three counts of sexual abuse in the second degree.  Jeff and Frank will tell what it is like to prosecute the most infamous defendant in Polk County.

10:15 – 11:45     Toni Christy - Being a Captioner/CART provider (.15)Toni broadcasts caption sporting events, weather and other TV programs; she writes via a website for business colleagues who are hearing impaired and in need of her services. She travels to championship sports venues to use her skills to take down verbatim the post-game interviews of the athletes and coaches who participate. She has also traveled to many conferences around the country, CARTing for the deaf in classroom settings and utilizing the overhead projector. Toni’s presentation will focus on being a Captioner/CART provider and her experiences.

11:45 – 12:00     Distinguished Service Award

12:00 – 1:30       Awards Lunch – Hy-Vee Hall

1:30 – 3:00         Tyler Sirovy – Life as a Wounded Warrior (.15) Tyler is a native of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 2003. He was severely injured while serving our country in 2011 and has since been honorably discharged from the military. Tyler is a Purple Heart recipient and has been honored for his bravery and heroism. Tyler will be discussing his personal experiences of life in the military, facing death as he experienced a severe injury from an IED explosion and the necessity of having a “team” in any workplace.

3:20 – 4:20           Dr. Mike VanderVeen – Court Reporting Injuries (.10)Dr. Michael Vander Veen was a graduate from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City in 2015. He has been serving the community of Oskaloosa, Iowa, alongside Dr. Terryl Wolfswinkel since January of 2016 at Oskaloosa Chiropractic Clinic. Dr. Vander Veen’s focus is not only getting patients out of pain and feeling better but on their overall well-being as well. He has a passion for serving those around him and helping them in any way he can. Dr. Vander Veen’s presentation will focus on chiropractic care for court reporters and the injuries court reporters deal with and how best to resolve that pain and suffering through chiropractic  care.

Wednesday – June 15, 2016

8:00 – 9:00           Kaylan McCord – Proofing & Scoping (.10) Kaylan McCord will be speaking on being a reporter, scopist, and proofreader.  She is a working-at-home mom, reporting one day a week and scoping/proofing the other days.  She graduated from AIB in 2004 and has her RPR and Iowa CSR.  If you are interested in trying a scopist or proofreader but haven't taken the leap, come and hear why it's so beneficial for you!

9:20 – 10:20         Judge Paul Scott – Insanity Plea- Loren Huss (.10)Judge Scott was counsel for Loren Huss in 2001 in the retrial of  Mr. Huss’s murder conviction.  Huss was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the brutal 1986 killing of his girlfriend, Marilyn Sheets.  Judge Scott then represented Huss in the commitment hearings following the not guilty verdict. Judge Scott will discuss the Huss case and his involvement in it.

10:20 – 10:40        Break with Vendors

10:40 – 11:40        Kathy Lerma – Mental Health & Disabilities Regions (.10) Kathy’s work experience has been in Public Health Nursing as Director of Decatur County Public Health, the Assistant Administrator for Decatur County Hospital, Director for Decatur County Community Services for seven years and currently serves as CEO for the County Rural Offices of Social Services or CROSS Region.  The CROSS region is comprised of seven counties: Clarke, Decatur, Lucas Marion, Monroe, Ringgold and Wayne counties. Kathy will speak about the legislative transition from county based Community Services and the Central Point of Coordination process to the current Mental Health and Disabilities (MH/DS) Regions and the role MH/DS Regions now serve in their communities and in the court system.

ROOM BLOCK INFORMATION:

Our room block is located at the Holiday Inn Downtown Mercy Campus. A free shuttle from the hotel to Iowa Events Center for convention is available, so you can leave your car parked at the hotel (for free) and enjoy a ride back and forth to our convention and related events. Rooms are available in the room block for June 13 and June 14. There is also a limited number of rooms available for June 12.

Rooms are available at a group rate of $101 per night.

Our room block will be held until May 23, 2016, so be sure to book your reservation by then. Our room block name is Iowa Court Reporters Association.
