IOWA COURT REPORTERS ASSOCIATION

Sonya Kennedy, CSR, RPR

I grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from AIB College of Business in 1988.  Jobs in Iowa were scarce back then, so my career took me to Omaha, Nebraska, where I freelanced for five years for Quinn’s Quality Reporting.  I then took the plunge into an officialship for the Honorable Gary B. Randall for the next 17 years until his retirement in 2020.  I worked on a lot of high-profile cases there and enjoyed every bit of my time in Omaha.  I always wanted to work in Iowa at some point, and there was an opening in the Fourth District, so I jumped the river and haven’t look back.

I currently work and rotate between five DAJs who made the transition from Nebraska to Iowa an easy one.

I have been married to my husband David for 15 years, but we met in 1998 when I moved to Nebraska.  I have a daughter who lives in Des Moines, Jana, who’s a surgical nurse educator; a son, Joshua, who lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, who works in internet customer service and is also a musician (violin/fiddle); and a stepson, Micheal, who is living out his dreams in Japan.  I also have two grandsons, Atticus, who will be 17 this year, and new baby Arco who will be four months old.

I have served on boards in the past through Nebraska and am looking forward to serving my colleagues here in Iowa.  It’s very good to be home!
